    Metabolism Booster #1:

    Regular Weights Training &

    Iodine Supplementation

    Iodine is a trace element, a mineral and a super important micro nutrient that many –if not most– are deficient in.
    It’s my all-time-favorite supplement. It’s just crazy what it does, I’m planning on writing a special post soon just about all the benefits you get from iodine.

    The major benefit this incredible substance has for your metabolism is that it helps raise T3, or active thyroid hormone, and that hormone is the over-regulator of your metabolic rate.     Metabolism Booster #3:

    Coconut Butter/Oil

    Organic Coconut Butter or Coconut Oil (same thing) is made up largely of MCT (medium chained triglycerides), which are preferably metabolized for energy, as opposed to being stored as body fat.

    Apparently coconut butter can raise body temperature and consequently the BMR (basal metabolic rate).

    It seems coconut oil stimulates thyroid function, and that in turn would elevate energy levels and help burn off body fat, as outlined above in the iodine section.

    A recent study showed that MCT’s are superior to other fatty acids for fat loss:
    On a calorie deficit, the MCT-group burned 7 pounds of fat as opposed to the olive oil-group which dropped just 3 pounds.

    Another benefit of this super smart fat is it’s high concentration (40%) of a rather special fatty acid: Lauric Acid is a powerful anti-microbal agent. It is also found in mother’s milk.

    Additionally, coconut oil seems to protect your liver from alcohol and other toxins.

      Hey great article Mark.

      I eat tons of Coconut Oil and I love it. Been a bit lazy with the exercise in december though :/

      Do you feel there is a greater benefit to taking Iodine directly instead of getting it through seaweed such as Spirulina and Kelp, which I do?

        Hey Kris, Happy New Year man! :-)

        Yeah seaweed is absolutely great and I have it everyday, too…additionally to the iodine.

        Lugol s Solution (Iodine solution) is just so much more concentrated and consequently has many extra benefits, like the antiseptic ones for example.

        Most important of all it’s way stronger, because when you’re deficient in a mineral like iodine you need high dosages for a while to re-fill your body’s store, so to speak.

        Seaweed would never do it, you’d have to eat a ton every day, and then it’s probably still not enough.

        So the way I do it is I have the iodine every day plus seaweed too.

        I think if you had seaweed on a daily basis all your life like some Japanese for example, you might prevent a deficiency in iodine and consequently don’t need to re-fill, in that situation daily kelp and such might be enough (even though even then I guess some extra iodine would do no harm whatsoever)

        But when deficient, much, much higher doses are required than seaweed could ever supply.

        It’s kinda like the depletion of methylators (especially B12) in steroid users: steroids totally deplete B12 stores, then they need to replace them intravenously, intramuscularly or subcutaneously at high dosages, otherwise it would never happen…

        So long story short: extra Iodine? You BET! At least until you’re repleted, then a daily maintenance dose will do, and seaweed might be sufficient if you have a lot every day… personally I’d still keep using Lugols, just at a somewhat lower dose, say 1-3 drops 1-3x daily (10% solution)
